"Forsaken (Movie Review)" by W.B. Vogel
May 22, 2002 A.D.
A truly great vampire movie is rare. But 2001's "Forsaken" [Screen Gems, Inc.] is a fast-paced, horror-ride into the ravenous night.
The story centers around a road-weary traveler, Sean (Kerr Smith), and a mysterious, slacker/hitchhiker named Nick (Brendan Fehr). Along the way, they pick-up a dazed, and obviously ill Megan (Izabella Miko). She has been the victim of a group of wandering vampires. Bitten, the change is taking her rapidly.
The story increases in intensity as the falsehoods unravel. Megan is being stalked by her monstrous sire (Jonathan Schaech), and his crew, as they continue their murderous rampage through the southwest. Nick is hunting them, as he is trying to destroy the origin of his own infection.
Through this winding maelstrom of tightening mayhem they continually switch between predator and prey, as Sean becomes infected as well. It is then that he realizes that this is one conflict that he won't be able to slither out of. Then the chaos really ensues.
The mythology begins at a new origin point. Avoiding the whole Dracula history, these fangless nosferatu are the progeny of a blood pact between eight fallen French crusaders and Abaddon ("the Angel of the Bottomless Pit") at the siege of Antioch. Most of the more ridiculous vampire stereotypes are diverted without ruining mystique.
Overall, the movie is very well done. The film has a late 1990's texture to its look. The action is fast paced, and the gore factor is minimally, yet expertly done. The acting is convincingly executed as well, contributing greatly to the roar of this monstrous delight.
